For the majority of us, in the high-paced world we live in today, we spend on average over an hour a day in our cars. While some of us spend more than three to four hours in a vehicle each day, it is clear to see that we have come to spend an extensive portion of our days, if not weeks, in our cars.
For many of us, our cars have become our second home, our mobile office, and our personal oasis.
Think about it – your car is where you decompress from the day. For some of us, it is a place where we receive business calls, and a place where we switch from one aspect of our lives to another.
We all have a unique relationship with our car, but we often forget our vehicles are anything but mechanical transport.
What if we thought of our cars differently?
What if we saw our vehicles as an extension of our own personal energy field? Just like we create good energy in our living space that reflects our personality and helps us to feel good, we just need to take the steps to shift our vehicles from an entrenched transport medium to a mobile sanctuary where we can gather, nurture, and energize ourselves.
The first shift happens with a simple realization.
Every minute in your vehicle, you have a chance to practice being mindful of yourself, set intentions, and connect spiritually. When we navigate the automobiles in our lives with this perspective, even the most routine commute to work becomes a mode of moving meditation and personal development!
Now, before we delve into the spiritual side of car care, I want to recognize the “car maintenance” we all already know about. This is the material aspect that has to be respected.
This type of general maintenance sets the standards of ownership with the expectation that your car will run reliably and safely, and that you can legally own and operate the vehicle you have purchased.
However, there is an entirely new dimension of car care that we rarely think of, and that is the energetic/spiritual dimension of car care.
The car you drive is more than an assemblage of metal, plastic, and electronics, although it is certainly all of that. Your car is an energy vessel, which has absorbed and will hold and emit the collective energy of every trip, every passenger, and every emotion expressed inside its four walls.
Go ahead! Think of what your vehicle has experienced.
Some typical emotional experiences the car is absorbing:
Just like we can describe home and space a little heavier after a fight or lighter after a joyful gathering, our cars will hold similar energetic impressions.
It is for the reasons above that spiritual care is just as important as your mechanical care. Once we start to think of our vehicle as an energetic extension that responds to care and intention, we can take on a whole new experience with our daily transportation.
A relationship in which your vehicle is a companion supporting you on your spiritual journey – a place that can actively transition your wellbeing and personal development – instead of merely transporting you from location to location.
The transformation of your vehicle’s interior into a spiritually supporting domain starts with the careful selection and placement of any crystals and aromatherapy parts. Remember – this is about enhancing your driving experience, so first and foremost, safety.
Choosing the right crystals for your vehicle has a lot to do with selecting the stones that have the right energetic properties to fit your vehicle and make your drives safer.
The right scents can enhance driving. These are items for consideration: when selecting appropriate scents for aromatherapy in vehicles, you need to consider what scents enhance alertness and concentration.
Peppermint, eucalyptus, and rosemary aromas all promote alertness that can help you maintain mental clarity and overcome the urge to sleep, particularly for those early morning commutes or very long road trips.
If you want to promote stress reduction without sedation, try pleasant bergamot or light citrus aromas that provide a calming effect while still maintaining your mind clear and hyper-aware, particularly if you are stuck in heavy traffic or in stressful driving situations.
Seasonal selections can harmonize your car’s energy with the cycles of nature. Winter scents may include pine, balsam, cinnamon, etc., and spring scents may include fresh floral essences, etc.
Natural diffusion techniques will work best in a car. For instance, you can place several drops on a cotton ball and attach that cotton ball to your air vent, or purchase little clips that are shaped like a diffuser and attach them to the vent.
Always remember: It’s better to err on the side of subtlety when diffusing. If your car is overpowered by a scent, this can act as a distraction, or worse, cause you to become drowsy, which can be seriously dangerous while driving.
Just as you wash the exterior of your car regularly and vacuum out the interior, your car can benefit from an energetic cleanse every once in a while, to clear out any residual negative energy like tension, argument energy, or stress energy, and refresh the vehicle’s system.
One-Time Energy Clearing – Occasional clearing, like sage, or palo santo, or sound clearing with small bells or singing bowls, can vastly change the energy in a car. Crack open all the windows and doors and let cleansing smoke (or sounds) fill the space. Set the intention to release whatever negative energy accumulates from tense drives.
Visualization Exercise – While moving through your regular cleaning, introducing visualization exercises where you consciously release negative energy from challenging commutes will greatly help cleanse the energetic residue in your car or truck. You may physically wipe down surfaces, but visualize not just wiping away dirt, but removing energetic debris or residue from road rage, work stress, or difficult conversations that were had in the car.
Salt Cleansing – Sea salt sprinkled on the floor mats is very effective as an energetic cleansing and resetting measure. You can sprinkle it on the mats and carpeting or seats and let it sit for several hours (or overnight), then vacuum thoroughly. Salt is a naturally occurring absorbent for negative energy and is perfect for resetting to an energetic baseline (especially after difficult periods or when you are learning to drive).
Intentions for Protection – Whenever you are doing any of these energetic clearing processes, develop intentions for protection, safe travel, positive and enriching experiences. Your focused intentions will make any energetic clearing process more effective and will help support the establishment of your car as a sacred, healthy space for your well-being.
The time you spend in your car on an everyday commute can provide unlimited potential for spiritual practice and personal transformation. All it takes is to approach that time with conscious awareness while you are driving.
Instead of thinking of the time spent in the car as wasted time or bad time, you might consider the time you have in your car to be absolutely precious for your inner work and an opportunity to connect with your higher self.
When you find yourself in unpleasant traffic or sharing the road with aggressive drivers, employ deep, conscious breathing in order to remain calm and centered.
Harvard Medical School research indicates that focusing your attention on your breath is among the easiest methods of stress reduction that allows for immediate relaxation, and can assist in reducing the negative effects on your health over time.
The 4-7-8 breath (inhale for 4, hold for 7, exhale for 8) is particularly beneficial in rapidly reducing stress and returning to a peaceful state when driving.
Alternatively, consider the counting method suggested by breathing meditation experts; silently counting the number of breaths (in-one, out-two, in-three). This gives your mind something to align its attention on instead of stressful driving situations.

The red lights you encounter while driving become moments of opportunity for mini meditations rather than annoying interruptions. More specifically, a red light is a natural pause point, where you can:
Prior to starting your engine, pause for a moment to clearly articulate your intentions for the trip – arrive safely, be patient with other drivers, and use the transit time as a personal reflection time.
This generates focused energy for your whole journey.

Incorporating the spiritual and practical aspects of car care creates a holistic relationship with your vehicle that goes well beyond the capacity for transportation.
When you think of your car less as an object and more as a spiritual partner, you will notice a marked change in your daily experience behind the wheel.
Don’t expect this change to happen overnight. As with anything in life, if you put a bit of effort into it, practice creating new habits regularly, and do it with authentic intention, your relationship with your vehicle can become one of your greatest helpers along your spiritual path.
With intention, you can turn your vehicle from a required tool into an instrument of divine guidance, supporting you in safely maneuvering through life, while also providing opportunities for transformation, contemplation, and deeper connections with your higher self.
I know this may all seem a little eccentric, but I genuinely urge you to try these different practices and customize them to suit your needs. Start with a few.
After trying it out in practice, you will be able to decide which one or two ideas fit you most. You can stick to just these or expand them further.
It is not the point to be perfect, but to have fun and enjoy yourself while you are building this new perspective. After all, we all strive to develop connections and find meaning in all aspects of our daily lives. And we can upgrade our experience and stay mindful even in those moments when we are merely getting from place to place.
